Some heavy-duty trucks numbering about 200 have taken over the Accra-Tema motorway putting the lives of other motorists and passengers in danger. The long vehicles took over the axle load weighing area at the Tema end of the motorway near the Ashaiman interchange area, thereby creating a bad traffic situation on the speedway. One road user, Mr Emmanuel Arthur, told Class News that the motorway is for speed and, thus, the way the heavy-duty trucks are parked along the speed way is threatening the safety of other road users. He expressed worry about why the safety authorities are not acting on that kind of indiscipline on the motorway.
He fears the situation could contribute to crashes on the motorway in this festive season and, so, appealed to the Ashaiman Municipality Assembly to let the Divisional police command clear the trucks from the area to save life and property. Mr Arthur further appealed to drivers to be careful when driving on the motorway during the Christmas season since there are no streetlights on the stretch.
One Ghanaian driver also told Class News that the truck drivers are from neighbouring West African countries.
According to him, the truckers park along the motorway to pass the night so as to avoid paying for hotels in Tema.
