The Accra High Court has asked Sammy Gyamfi, National Communications Director for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to pay GH˘500,000 to Dr. Matthew Nana Poku, the Energy Minister, for defamation.
The defamation entails a comment Sammy Gyamfi made during a press conference in 2019 concerning the kidnapping of the Canadian girls. The comments were followed by a defamation suit filed by the Energy Minister, who is also the MP for Manhyia South.
According to Napo’s lawyers, the comments made by Sammy Gyamfi were, “Seidu’s association with the NPP is more than meets the eye. He is alleged to be the personal bodyguard of the Asokore Mampong MCE, Alhaji Alidu Seidu, and an errand boy for both Manhyia MP, Hon Mathew Opoku Prempeh and Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (aka Wontumi,”
Justice Charles Gyamfi Danquah, presiding over the case, ruled the case in favour of the Minister. This judgement was made on Thursday, 13th October, 2022 where an amount of GH˘500,000 in damages was awarded with a restraint on Sammy Gyamfi and his followers from making future defamatory claims against Dr. Matthew Nana Poku.
The court ordered Sammy Gyamfi and his agents to cease and desist from further uttering or broadcasting defamatory statements against the Energy Minister and awarded damages in the amount of GH˘500,000
