It is quite alarming that skin bleaching is now a common practice among African women and this imposes a major health challenge due to the associated dermatological side effects such as skin cancer, high blood pressure etc.
Most African women strongly believe that beauty is incomplete if their skin remains black. It is equally worrisome that these women will go to great lengths to transform their natural dark skin color into a lighter one.
However there are some factors that give credence to skin bleaching; one of such is that there is faster and easier access to higher paid jobs particularly on sales and marketing, air hostessing etc. For light skinned women. Moreover, some corporations manipulate people, making my them believe with lighter skin they have more chances to succeed.
Unfortunately, this misconceptions are growing rapidly and has pushed most African women into patronizing bleaching products. It is annoying that illiterate women and ladies have fallen prey to this deception. It is even more annoying that high class and educated women are doing the exact same thing.
In addition, this act poses alot of health hazards to the human body including severe itching, fatigue, reddness, swollen skin, irritation, dry skin, numbness as well as sensitivity to light, high blood pressure, nerologic symptoms etc among others. The hazards even go and far as slowing down the healing process after a surgery.
It's painful to see that people are still bleaching even after all the side effects.
This is a practice that must be mutilated as soon as possible. Public education and awareness both on ground and social media, internet influence will greatly help to eradicate or at least slow down this practice.
